Round Cacti: beautimous barrels

Plants
barrel cactus

A multi-headed barrel cactus in the wild.

Barrel cacti are common in the Sonoran desert. Their shape and size look great with prickly pear, desert shrubs, and trees.

Compass barrel and fishhook barrel are the most common barrels in the Sonoran desert. The fruit and seeds provide food for animals. I find their ultra-low water requirement attractive. For a variety with brighter color, consider a fire barrel, which has redder spines.

If you’re going for all native Sonoran desert landscaping, this plant is a must have.
